062806. Patching Pot Holes. The best and cheapest patches for holes in roadways, driveways, and other asphalt pads, are bags of cement that have gotten hard and unusable. Tile mortars, portland, sakrete, and the like. Do not throw these away. In fact, actively collect them if you can. When filling a pothole with these bags, fill the hole with water, then use as many as needed to fill the pothole, crushing each with a sledge hammer as it is put in the hole. Water well as you go. Mound the broken concrete up above the level of the hole a good little ways. Once this is accomplished use a car to run one of the tires over the hole, smashing the mix flat, or so that it is slightly mounded in a bump over the hole. Excess will go away on its own over time, or the whole works can be swept and washed 3 or 4 days later after the mix has hardened. I have seen patches like this stop erosion and last over 5 years and still counting.

062606. Glass can be drilled with a slotted brass round-head bolt of the type that is tightened with a regular screwdriver. The bolt should be 3 to 4 inches long, and its shaft is chucked into a hand drill, or an electric drill whose speed can be slowed way down.

The round head of the bolt is actually what touches the glass and the slot carries the abrasive which is valve grinding compound. Slowly wear a hole through the glass, by keeping the contact point of the bolt-head on the glass well supplied with the valve grinding compound. The slot of the bolt holds and carries the abrasive in a somewhat uniform manner. Light pressure and care will create a nice uniform drilled hole in most glass types. Practice on scrap before tackling bigger jobs. Lay glass to be drilled on good form surface like flat plywood.
